There is an old-world romance in Cala Di Volpe. Located in Arzachena in northeastern Sardinia, this fishing village still keeps its roots in pastel-colored houses and a classic Mediterranean port against the backdrop of the Golfo Aranci and Isola Tavolara mountains. Less developed than some of its Emerald Coast neighbors such as Porto Cervo, the town is known more for its beaches and laid-back atmosphere of luxury.

However, one of the most luxurious hotels in the area, its namesake, Cala Di Volpe, is located here. The hotel was originally built as the Aga Khan’s private home and later appeared on the silver screen in the 1977 James Bond movie “The Spy Who Loved Me.” That’s why the hotel attracts celebrities and tourists who want to see its elegant design, luxurious amenities and experience the rest of the Costa Smerelda.

To get into the heart of Sardinian life, visit the mountain village of San Pantaleo and explore its markets full of local wine, honey and pastries, as well as antiques and products of silk, cashmere, ceramics and leather created by local artists.

The region’s wines are becoming a popular export item, and the Vigne Surrau winery is one of the most promising vineyards in the region, so be sure to make a stop and taste the local grapes before the rest of the world knows about them.
